First Steps into
After you've installed netXtract, just start up IE and point it to a web destination.
netXtract's panel (or sidebar) should appear on the left-hand side of your IE browser
window (if it does not, it may be because you have another IE sidebar open; select the View | Explorer Bar | netXtract
menu to make netXtract visible).
Once IE has loaded the web page you have pointed it to, you'll notice that netXtract has indexed that page.
A few things to note:
- netXtract indexes all words in the page except for commonly used words (such as "of", "the", "and", "on" and others).
These words are considered to be common and are included in netXtract's default "Ignore" dictionary (all words in the
ignore dictionary are not indexed).
- by default, netXtract will display the indexed words in descending alphabetical order. You may also view the
indexed word list ordered by frequency count by clicking on the "Count" button in the indexing panel. To toggle
between ascending and descending sorting order, simply click on the column header (i.e. Word or Count). A small
red arrow will indicate which is the currently sorted column (Word or Count), and direction (ascending or descending).
- netXtract offers two tabs as part of its indexing panel. By default, the "Index" tab is selected, which provides
a list of all words within the page you've currently accessed (except those that are not part of the default "Ignore"
dictionary). To make use of the "Context" tab, just double-click on one of the words in the "Index" panel.
netXtract will immediately extract all contexts within the page that contain that indexed word and present
them to you in the same panel. You may either double-click a context to move immediately to the part of the
document that contains that context, or click the "Index" tab to return to the indexed word list.
- if you want to save one of the contexts to your netXtract Knowledge Base, simply right-click on the
context and select "Save to KBase" from the pop-up menu.
- you may also want to save other ranges of text from the Web page displayed in your IE browser. Simply
select the text you want to save, right-click in the selection and pick "Save to KBase from the pop-up menu).
- to exploit the contents of your netXtract Knowledge Base, simply right click in the netXtract sidebar
and select "View KBase" from the pop-up menu.
- to exit netXtract, you can click on the "X" in the top right corner of the netXtract panel.
Remember that in order to start netXtract again, you can select "netXtract" from IE's View | Explorer Bar menu.
